Top 40 Radio is like a drug. You want to get rid of it, but you simply can’t stop listening.
Everywhere you go- whether it be the mall, your local fast food joint, a chain restaurant or your car- it’s almost like the songs are stalking you and becoming the annoying soundtrack of your life.
I for one, cannot stand Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” or Demi Lovato’s “Heartattack.” Having heard the songs at least once every day for the past two months, it’s almost enough to make me smash my radio to pieces.
One would think that I would have learned not to listen to Top 40 radio much sooner.
And yet like everything that’s bad for me, listening to the same songs over and over again isn’t making me any smarter.
So if you’re like me and want a change (because let’s face it, who isn’t down for a change?!), here are some alternative podcasts/playlists you should be listening to.
Anyone who has spoken to me recently must know that the injustices of racism holds a special place in my heart. While I won’t delve into my hatred for it (because really, why should anyone have to defend why racism sucks?), finding this podcast was almost like a godsend to me when I was even getting sick of listening to my own iTunes library.
The premise of the Yo! Is This Racist podcast is pretty obvious. Hosted by Andrew Ti and a weekly special guest every weekday, the two answer questions sent in by listeners and determine whether things are racist or not.
This podcast is funny, insightful and delightfully blunt. From discussing the movie Cloud Atlas to asking whether “Asian” sections at the supermarket are discriminatory, Ti and his guest will have answers to all your racism questions.
When everyone was raving on about this online music streamer, I was extremely confused. “What the heck is Songza?!” I asked to my fellow Twitter followers.
“It’s amazing,” they would reply…which didn’t help me at all.
But after much hesitation, I tried the site out and realized my friends were right. There was a playlist for every single one of my moods. IT HONESTLY FELT LIKE CHRISTMAS.
From 90s R&B, indie dance party music to listening to my fave tunes from the early 2000s (anyone remember “Yeah!” by Usher??), I come here to relive memories and to find some new artists to download and appreciate.
And the best thing about this? There are NO annoying commercials!!
As a movie lover who occasionally finds joy in movies that are SO BAD THEY’RE GOOD (Spice World, anyone?), I found this podcast extremely hilarious.
Discussing scenes and characters of movies such as The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Fast 6, this show hosted by a group of comedians will have you agreeing and laughing hysterically.
Fans of comedy will also be excited to hear that this show is hosted by the very funny Paul Scheer, who was in shows like Burning Love and NTSF: SD: SUV.
He’s so underrated. It’s unfortunate I didn’t know who he was at the time he did a live reading of American Beauty at TIFF.
